Gynecology

Gynecological care is devoted to reproductive wellness. In general, most women will regularly receive gynecological care from their teenage years all the way through menopause.

Routine gynecological care can consist of a wide variety of screenings, diagnostics, and small procedures. Your provider will be able to help you with issues ranging from polyps to pelvic pain and uterine fibroids. In general, your gynecological wellness will benefit from regular checkups and exams. A gynecologist is a physician that specializes in the overall reproductive health of women, from their first menstrual cycle to menopause.

Typical gynecology visits can include the following:

  • Bladder prolapse, rectal prolapse, uterine or vaginal prolapse
  • Bleeding issues, including abnormal bleeding, heavy or abnormal periods, and peri- or post-menopausal bleeding
  • Cervical or endometrial polyps
  • Contraceptive management
  • Endometriosis
  • Fecal incontinence and constipation
  • Gynecologic cancers
  • Menopausal and perimenopausal symptoms
  • Ovarian cysts and pelvic masses
  • Painful periods
  • Pap smears
  • Pelvic organ prolapse
  • Pelvic pain and pelvic infections
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Uterine fibroids
  • Vaginal and vulvar issues

Well Woman Care

Most patients can receive routine well woman care, including pap smears for cervical cancer screening, with one of our family medicine physicians or nurse practitioners as part of a single convenient primary care visit. In some instances, you may prefer that your routine gynecologic care is done by a gynecologist. In this case, you may schedule that if you prefer.

Nonsurgical and Surgical Options

We can provide you with outpatient care, both nonsurgical and minor surgical including IUD and implant placement and removal, colposcopy, and LEEP procedures. Depending on your personal history and symptoms, your team may recommend a minimally invasive surgery to address your individual condition. Many of the gynecologic surgeries performed at Lakes Regional Healthcare are now done robotically with our da Vinci robot. This robot allows surgeons to make just a few small incisions and perform procedures using a high level of magnification and a camera to guide tiny “robotic” arms that perform the physical aspect of the surgery. It results in shorter hospital stays, less postoperative pain, fewer complications, and quicker recovery and return to work times for our patients.
