Falling happens to many of us. In fact, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 1 in 4 older adults falls each year. However, there are many ways to prevent a fall, one of which is removing home hazards. Here’s a simple, room-by-room walkthrough you can do in about 15 minutes. If you’re an adult child checking in on a parent, this doubles as a respectful, practical way to help without making it feel like a big conversation.
Entryway
- Secure or remove loose doormats and rugs
- Add a bright light at the door for evening arrivals
- Keep shoes, bags, and packages out of the walking path
Stairs and Hallways
- Make sure handrails are sturdy on both sides, if possible
- Add nightlights along the path to the bathroom
- Check that carpet edges and stair nosing are secure, not curling or loose
Bathroom
- Install grab bars near the toilet and in the shower or tub; these help long before an injury happens, not just after
- Use a non-slip mat inside the tub or shower
- Keep a nightlight on or nearby for overnight trips
Bedroom
- Keep a clear, well-lit path from the bed to the bathroom
- Place a lamp or light switch within reach of the bed
- Avoid storing items on the floor near the bed
Kitchen and Living Areas
- Keep frequently used items on lower, easy-to-reach shelves to avoid needing a step stool
- Tape down or remove cords running across walking paths
- Arrange furniture with wide, clear walking paths
Outdoors
- Repair cracked or uneven walkways and steps
- Add handrails to outdoor steps if there isn’t one already
- Keep porch lights on or add motion-sensor lighting for early darkness
As Daylight Saving Time ends on November 1, evenings get dark early, which means more walking, driving, and errands happen in low light. It’s also the season when families gather for the holidays. If you’re visiting a parent or grandparent this fall, a 15-minute walkthrough of their home is one of the most useful things you can do while you’re there. It doesn’t have to be a heavy conversation. Frame it as a quick favor: “Mind if I check your lighting and rugs while I’m here?”
Pick one room this week and do the walkthrough. If you’d like a more thorough evaluation, talk to your Lakes Regional Family Medicine provider about an occupational therapy home safety consult.
