Craig Cunningham, M.D., a family medicine physician joining Avera Medical Group Spirit Lake Medical Center, will begin seeing patients on August 1, 2019.
Dr. Cunningham recently moved back to the lakes region after completing his family medicine residency in Wichita, Kansas. Dr. Cunningham grew up in Spencer and is happy to be living in the lakes area. He said, “My wife’s parents as well as my parents live in Spencer. Most importantly, we wanted to be close to family. Additionally, Avera is a fantastic organization to work for and since joining, I’ve been continually impressed. We felt like we fit in well with the other physicians and staff we met on our interview day. Overall, it was an excellent opportunity for us and we are incredibly grateful to be here.”
Dr. Cunningham received his undergraduate degree in Biology from Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, and his medical degree from the University of Iowa’s Carver College of Medicine in Iowa City, Iowa. He is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians.

Dr. Cunningham provides family medical care to patients of all ages, with an emphasis on prenatal and full-spectrum obstetrical care, pediatrics, and women’s health. He said he chose family medicine as his specialty because of the continuity of care and the broad scope of practice. “Every day is different and in no other specialty can you care so comprehensively for the family unit. From pregnant mothers to infants, to grandparents and everyone in between,” he said.
In his free time, Dr. Cunningham enjoys spending it with his wife Lauren, daughters Emma and Theresa (ages four and two), and son James (age three months). When he gets the chance, he also loves golfing and being active outdoors.
